Column 4

As I stated last week, America was founded with the Declaration of Independence, thus instilling a spirit of independence in America . I’d like to carry this idea further this week and discuss how this spirit of independence affects the way we raise children. Some might argue that the teaching of an independent spirit begins very early, even in infancy. Regardless of when parents try to start teaching this, children pick up on it very early. I remember when I was a young child, my great grandfather died. My great grandmother had many options about how and where to live, but she very strongly insisted on living alone, in her own apartment. Years later she had some medical problems which forced her to get help, but she insisted on that help coming from people other than family, in an assisted living center. When she got over her health problems, she returned to her apartment. She lived in her apartment, alone, until the day she died. However, when I say alone I do not mean lonely. She took great pride in her ability to function on her own. I, as a young child, saw this and learned a spirit of independence from her.

Teaching of an independent spirit changes form with age. When my kids get hurt, as long as it’s not serious, I do not run to comfort them, I tell them to “shake it off”. My two-year-old daughter Joa is particularly good at this and can get over being hurt quite quickly on her own. As the children get even older, this independence is instilled by teaching self-reliance. In my case, I got my first job when I was 14 years old and have always had a job since then. I was taught to learn to do as many things as possible for myself. I was taught from an early age how to change a car tire, how to do laundry, how to use tools, etc. This is very common in an American household to this day.  I still have a feeling of pride in self-accomplishment whenever I am able to fix something all by myself. The day that I installed a garage door opener all alone was a very proud day for me.

My parents could have paid for my college tuition, but they felt that I should pay it myself so that I would appreciate the education I was receiving. Though it was very hard at the time, I can look back now and appreciate this. As a professor I see a lot of students, some of whom pay their own tuition and some of whom have their tuition paid by their parents. Without a doubt, those that pay their own tuition are better students. They try harder. They appreciate learning more. They are more enjoyable to have in my classroom.

If you look, there would be discrepancies in each American household about the values they feel are important. Despite these discrepancies, you would find many universal values in all American families such as individualism from the previous column and independence this week. It is these universal values that I hope to share with you in this column using my personal experiences. However, there is no “right” or “wrong” way regarding any topic in this column.  I just hope in this column that I can help you to understand that people think differently in different cultures.
