A new space is opening for a conversation among evangelicals on moral issues. Earlier this spring, a group of Religious Right leaders including James Dobson, Tony Perkins, Gary Bauer, and about 20 others sent a letter to the National Association of Evangelicals board of directors. They challenged its vice president for governmental affairs, Rich Cizik, saying he was "dividing and demoralizing the NAE" by orchestrating a "relentless campaign" opposing global warming. The letter ended by suggesting that "he be encouraged to resign his position with the NAE."

1. A new space is opening for ~ : ~을 위한 새로운 공간(여지, 가능성)이 열리고 있다.
2. challenge : ‘어떤 사람에게 그만하도록 명하고, 정체성에 대한 공식적인 증거를 보이도록 명령하다’는 의미로 쓰였다. ‘어떤 것에 대해 의심을 던지거나, 특별히 자극하는 방식으로 시험하다’는 뜻도 있다. (to order someone to stop and show official proof of identity, etc ; to cast doubt on something or call it in question ; to test, especially in a stimulating way)
3. demoralize : ‘어떤 사람의 확신이나 용기, 열정을 빼앗아가다,’ 또는 ‘마음을 낙담시키다.’ ‘도덕적으로 타락하다(타락시키다)’라는 뜻으로도 쓰인다. (to take away the confidence, courage or enthusiasm of someone ; to dishearten them ; to corrupt morally) 분열시킴을 통해 그 안의 구성원들을 혼란에 빠뜨리고 있다는 의미. 기독교 보수주의자들이 중대하게 내세우는 도덕적 문제에 주목하지 못하게 함으로써 NAE가 도덕성을 상실하게 만든다는 의미로도 읽힐 수 있다.
4. orchestrate : 관현악단의 음악을 조정하고 구성 및 평가하는 행위인데, 최선의 결과나 바라는 결과를 획득하기 위해 어떤 계획이나 상황을 조직하거나 조정하는 행위를 뜻한다. (to arrange, compose or score a piece of music for an orchestra ; to organize or arrange elements of a plan or a situation, etc so as to get the desired or best result)
5. relentless : relent는 화나 흥분이 가라앉아 마음이 누그러져서 불친절하거나 가혹해지지 않는 것이다. 또는 어떤 것을 가엾게 여기는 것을 뜻하며, 바람 등이 약해지거나 부드러워지는 것을 의미한다. (to become less severe or unkind; to soften ; to give way and agree to something one initially would not accept) 이러한 마음이나 상태가 부재한 것이 relentless이다. 냉혹하고 일말의 동정심도 없으며 조금도 수그러들지 않고 집요하게 밀고 나가며 멈출 줄 모르는 상태를 말한다. (a without pity ; harsh ; never stopping; unrelenting)
6. by orchestrating a "relentless campaign" opposing global warming : opposing은 ‘(지구 온난화)를 반대하고 있는’으로 해석되며, 앞에 which is가 생략되어 현재 반대 활동을 ‘행하고 있는 중’인 것으로 볼 수 있다. relentless campaign은 전미복음주의협회를 분란과 혼란으로 몰아넣는 것을 아랑곳하지 않고 운동을 벌이고 있는 것으로 여기고 이를 냉혹하다고 한 것.
7. suggesting that "he be encouraged ~ ” : suggest가 that절을 목적어로 가질 때, that절의 주어 다음에는 should(생략 가능)가 이어져서, ‘~ 해야 할 것을 주장하다’는 뜻이다. 따라서 여기서는 원래 he 다음에 should가 있는 것이기 때문에 be 동사가 원형(be)으로 쓰였다. 그가 ~ 하기를 권고 받아야 한다고 제안하다. 즉, 그의 사임을 권고할 것을 제안하다.

In their letter, the conservative leaders claimed, "The existence of global warming and its implications for mankind [sic] is a subject of heated controversy throughout the world." The truth, which almost everyone except them acknowledges, is there is little reasonable doubt left about the threat posed to the earth by climate change. There is an international consensus among scientists, religious leaders, business leaders, and economists that we must act, and act now, to preserve a world for our children. As Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman recently wrote: "The debate has ended over whether global warming is a problem caused by human activity. … There is now a broad consensus in this country, and indeed in the world, that global warming is happening, that it is a serious problem, and that humans are causing it."

1. claim : 이 단어에는 ‘권리’라는 뜻이 함축되어 있다. 13세기 라틴어로는 ‘cry out(울부짖다, 외치다)’을 의미하는 단어에서 기원했다. 즉, 어떤 주장을 해도, 그만한 권리를 느끼고 주장하는 것이다. 즉, 사실과 진실에 근거해 마땅하다고 여기는 정도가 아주 강하다. 소리쳐 울부짖는 것은 마땅히 지녀야 할 것을 지니지 못하여 겪는 고통의 울부짖음을 나타내는데, 그만큼 요구하고 주장하는 정도가 강함을 의미한다. 어떤 것의 소유를 주장하는 의미로도 쓰인다. 2. its implications for mankind : implication은 그 안에 포함되어 있는 어떤 것, 또는 포함하는 행위나 과정, 상태를 뜻한다. 인류에 대해서 그것(지구 온난화)이 내포하는 것이란, 결국 인류에 그것이 미치는 영향을 뜻한다. (implication : the act or process of implicating someone, or the state of being implicated ; something that is implied)
3. sic : 원문대로. 의심나는 또는 명백히 그릇된 원문을 그대로 인용할 때 뒤에 sic라고 표기한다.
4. heated controversy : controversy 자체가 길게 지속되는 논쟁이나 주장으로, 강력한 반대 의견이 존재하는 경우를 말한다. (a usually long-standing dispute or argument, especially one where there is a strong difference of opinion) 그러한 논쟁이 흥분과 화를 동반할 정도로 한껏 달구어진 상태가 heated controversy이다. (heat : having been made hot or warm ; angry or excited)
5. little reasonable doubt left about ~ : ~ 에 대해 남아 있는 합리적이라 할 만한 의심이 거의 없다. 즉, 이제 거의 모든 의심이 해소되어 이견의 여지가 없다는 뜻.
6. the threat posed to the earth by climate change : posed 앞에 which is가 생략된 것. posed는 수동태로 threat를 꾸며준다. 기후 변화에 의해 지구에 가해진 위협. 이를 능동으로 표현하면, ‘기후 변화가 지구에 가하는 위협’이다.
7. The debate has ended over whether ~ : whether 이하에 대한(over) 논쟁(debate)이 끝났다(has ended).
8. a problem caused by human activity : 여기서도 마찬가지로 caused 앞에 which+is가 생략된 것으로, 수동태 caused가 problem을 꾸며준다. 인간 활동에 의해 초래된 문제, 즉 ‘인간 활동이 초래한 문제’라는 능동의 의미로 파악할 수 있다.

Far from dividing evangelicals, Rich Cizik is part of a broad and growing evangelical consensus on global warming. He is a respected evangelical leader who is bringing Christians together to address the growing danger of climate change, and he is a hero to a new generation of evangelical students and pastors. That new generation has made "creation care" a mainstream evangelical issue. A statement last year by the Evangelical Climate Initiative noted that "we are convinced that evangelicals must engage this issue without any further lingering over the basic reality of the problem or humanity's responsibility to address it."

1. Far from ~ : ~하기는커녕.
2. address : ‘~에게 말을 걸다’가 기본적인 뜻인데, 청중을 목적으로 하면 ‘연설(강연)하다,’ 편지나 소포 겉봉에 대해서는 ‘주소(성명)를 쓰다’는 뜻이다. 어떤 문제에 대해서는 ‘초점을 맞추다, 다루다, 처리하다, 본격적으로 착수하다’는 뜻이다. 3. creation care : 하나님이 창조하신 세상을 귀하게 보존하고 돌보는 것으로써, 지금과 같이 환경이 파괴된 현실에서 그것을 치유하는 것까지를 책임으로 여긴다는 의미. 창조 세계를 지키고 돌볼 청지기로서의 사명을 다하지 못하여 지금의 환경 재난을 초래한 것에 대한 반성에서 시작된 운동이 내걸고 있는 기치이다. care of creation 또는 care for creation을 더 간단히 표현한 것.
4. linger (over) : 오랫동안 남아 있거나 떠나기를 꾸물대고 꺼려하는 것을 의미하는데, 이는 ‘사람이 아주 천천히 죽어간다’를 뜻하기도 한다. 꾸물대다 결국 때를 놓쳐 닫힌 문 앞에서 이를 갈며 울게 될지 모른다. (to remain for a long time ; to be slow or reluctant to leave ; to die very slowly)
5. the basic reality of the problem : 그 문제의 기본적인 현실. 또는 실제 현실 상황(진상).
6. responsibility to address it : 그것을 ‘주목해 다루어야’ 할 책임.

THE LETTER FROM Dobson and friends actually did acknowledge that there is a real debate among evangelicals about the seriousness of climate change and the reasons for it. So instead of calling for Cizik's resignation for saying global warming should be a moral issue for evangelical Christians, why don't Dobson and his friends accept a real debate on whether climate change is, indeed, one of the great moral issues of our time?

1. instead of calling for ~ : ~을 요구하는 대신에. call for는 ‘~을 큰소리로 부르다, ~을 소리쳐 청하다, ~을 필요로 하다(요구하다)’의 의미. (to make a demand or appeal for it)
2. for saying ~ : ~라고 말한 것에 대해서, ~라고 말한 것 때문에.
3. why don't you(Dobson and his friends) accept ~ ? : ~을 받아들이는 것이 어떤가? Why don't you ~ ‘왜 ~ 안 하는가?’가 아니라 제안의 의미.

And I would focus on the following very clear statement from Dobson's letter: "More importantly, we have observed that Cizik and others are using the global warming controversy to shift the emphasis away from the great moral issues of our time, notably the sanctity of human life, the integrity of marriage, and the teaching of sexual abstinence and morality to our children." I happen to believe that those three are, indeed, among the great moral issues of our time. But I believe they are not the only great moral issues, and that is what the conversation should be about.

1. I would focus on ~ : 여기서 would는 1인칭의 주어와 함께, 말하는 사람의 의견·감정을 완곡하게 표현하여 ‘…하고 싶다’라는 뜻으로 쓰였다. (to make polite invitations, offers or requests ; to express a desire)
2. the following ~ : 다음의 ~ .
3. statement from Dobson's letter : 돕슨의 편지에 그 출처를 둔(form) 진술. 즉, 돕슨 편지에 언급된 말(진술).
4. have observed that ~ : that 이하를 주시하며 지켜보았다는 의미. observe는 ‘어떤 것에 깨어 지켜보다, 주의 깊게 어떤 것을 보다, 깊이 주의를 기울이다, 행동이나 현상을 면밀히 조사하고 주목하다’는 뜻과 함께, ‘규칙이나 의식 등을 지키고 따르다’라는 뜻을 가진다. 더 나아가 ‘진술하다, 의견을 개진하다’는 뜻도 있다. (to notice or become conscious of something ; to watch something carefully ; to pay close attention to it ; to examine and note behaviour, symptoms or phenomena, etc ; to obey, follow or keep a law, custom or religious rite, etc ; to make a remark or comment)
5. to shift the emphasis away from ~ : 강조점(the emphasis)을 ~로부터(from) 멀리(away) 옮기다. 즉, ~에 주목하지 못하게 만들다.
6. the teaching of sexual abstinence and morality to our children : 우리의 아이들에게 sexual abstinence와 morality를 가르치는 것.
7. the integrity of marriage : 동성애 결혼을 반대하는 입장이 바로 이 the integrity of marriage를 보호하자는 운동을 벌인다. 미국 보수주의(기독교인)는 이러한 동성애 결혼을 가짜 결혼(psedu-marriage)으로 간주하고, 결혼을 타락시키지 말고 본래의 결혼의 고결함을 지키자고 목청을 높이고 있다.
8. I happen to believe that ~ : happen to ~ 는 ‘우연히(혹시) ~ ’는 뜻인데, ‘우연히 믿게 된다’는 것은 ‘자연스레 저절로 믿다’는 의미로도 이해할 수 있다. 다만, happen to를 씀을 통해 that 이하의 사실을 믿는 것에 강조점을 두지 않는 것이라 볼 수 있다.
9. and that is what the conversation should be about : that은 앞의 내용인 ‘그것들이 유일하게 중대한 도덕적 문제가 아니라는 것’이다. 이 점이 바로 대화가 이뤄져야 할 주제.

Is the fact that 30,000 children will die globally today and every day from needless hunger and disease a great moral issue for evangelical Christians? How about the reality of 3 billion of God's children living on less than $2 per day? And isn't the still-widespread and needless poverty in our own country, the richest nation in the world, a moral scandal? What about pandemics such as HIV/AIDS that wipe out whole generations, or the trafficking of massive numbers of women and children? Should genocide in Darfur be a moral issue for Christians? And what about disastrous wars such as Iraq? And then there is, of course, the issue that got Dobson and his allies so agitated. If the scientific consensus is right - climate change is real, is caused substantially by human activity, and could result in hundreds of thousands of deaths - then isn't that also a great moral issue? Could global warming actually be alarming evidence of human tinkering with God's creation?

1. needless hunger and disease : needless는 ‘불필요한, 쓸데없는.’ (unnecessary) hunger와 disease가 없어도 되는데 발생하고 있는 현상. 불가피한 기아와 질병이 아니라는 말.
2. Is the fact that ~ a great moral issue for evangelical Christians? : that 이하의 사실이 복음주의 기독교인들에게(for) 중대한 도덕적 문제인가?
3. How(What) about ~ ? : ~는 어떤가?
4. living on ~ : ~로 계속 살아가는.
5. less than $2 per day : 하루에 2달러에 못 미치는 돈.
6. wipe out : ‘깨끗하게 닦아내다’는 뜻에서 ‘제거하다, 싹쓸이 죽이다’의 의미로까지 연결된다. (to remove it by wiping ; get rid of something ; to kill or murder them)
7. agitated : agitate는 ‘어떤 사람의 감정이나 신경을 흥분시키거나 성가시게 만드는 것,’ 또는 ‘어떤 주제와 관련해 찬반으로 대중 여론을 자극시키는 것’을 뜻한다. (to excite or trouble a person, their feelings, nerves, etc ; to stir up public opinion for or against an issue)
8. the issue that got ~ (so) agitated : ‘get +목적어 + agitated(수동태 형용사)’의 형태로, ‘~를 매우 자극받게 만들다’는 뜻. ~를 매우 자극하여 흥분하게 만드는 문제(issue).
9. If the scientific consensus is right - … - then isn't that also ~ ? : scientific consensus는 과학적으로 일치된 의견을 말하는데, 그것이 바로 ‘- -’ 안의 내용이다. 그 내용이 옳다면, 그렇다면(then) 그것은(that) 또한 ~가 아닌가?
10. tinkering : tinker (+with, away)는 ‘어설프게 만지작거리다’는 의미로, 장난기 어린 아이가 어떤 기계를 만지작거리는 것을 의미한다. 그래서 화를 초래할 수 있다는 의미까지 내포한다. 어설프게 만지작거리다. (to work in an unskilled way, meddle or fiddle with machinery, etc, especially to try to improve it)
11. alarming evidence of human tinkering with God's creation : 인간이 하나님의 창조 세계를 어설프게(함부로) 건드렸다는(그래서 화를 좌초했다는) 놀라운 증거.

At the conclusion of its board meeting, the NAE endorsed a landmark document, "An Evangelical Declaration Against Torture." And it reaffirmed its support for the landmark "For the Health of the Nation" document unanimously adopted in 2003, commending its "principles of Christian political engagement to our entire community for action." The principles include: "1) We work to protect religious freedom and liberty of conscience; 2) We work to nurture family life and protect children; 3) We work to protect the sanctity of human life and to safeguard its nature; 4) We seek justice and compassion for the poor and vulnerable; 5) We work to protect human rights; 6) We seek peace and work to restrain violence; 7) We labor to protect God's creation."

In the official NAE press release, the only mention of Cizik, whom the Dobson letter had singled out and called upon the NAE to fire, came with these words: "Speaking at the annual board banquet, Rev. Richard Cizik, NAE vice president for governmental affairs, quoted evangelical theologian Carl F. H. Henry in his wake-up call to evangelicals 60 years ago: 'The cries of suffering humanity today are many. No evangelicalism which ignores the totality of man's condition dares respond in the name of Christianity.'"

I knew Carl F. H. Henry during my seminary years at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and through many conversations together during our early years of Sojourners. His biblical theology, social conscience, and political balance provided a younger generation with crucial moral guidance. We miss his voice today. But the NAE board, and its president Leith Anderson, knows that a new generation of evangelicals wants that same sound theology and good balance, and believes that Christian moral concerns (and God's concerns) go beyond only a few issues.

So let's have that debate, but let's change the tone of this from "a debate" to "a conversation," and make it into the kind of deep and necessary conversation among the people of God that it needs to be. This is, in fact, the big conversation going on among evangelicals (along with Catholics and many other Christians, too) across the nation and around the world. What are the great moral issues of our time for evangelical Christians?

1. change the tone of this from "a debate" to "a conversation" : 여기서 this는 앞에서 언급된 debate. debate가 가진 어감에서 conversation이 가진 어감으로 바꾸자는 뜻. debate는 공공 문제를 찬성·반대로 나누어 공개 석상에서 공식으로 토론하는 것을 말하기 때문에 대립적인 입장이 부각된 느낌을 주지만, conversation은 사람들 사이에 이뤄지는 비공식적이고 덜 격식을 갖춘 대화로서, 소통에 초점이 맞춰진 것이다. We have already received invitations from six major Christian universities eager to host this conversation between James Dobson and me. But this is bigger than just two people: It's the conversation we need to have on every Christian campus, in every church, and in public forums around the nation, especially as we approach another election season. Let's share our views on the moral agenda for Christians.
