Why the environmental movement and the racial justice movement need each other

Until recently, ecological justice has not been a major theme in the liberation movements in the African-American community. "Blacks don't care about the environment" is a typical comment by white ecologists. Racial and economic justice has been at best only a marginal concern in the mainstream environmental movement. "White people care more about the endangered whale and the spotted owl than they do about the survival of young blacks in our nation's cities" is a well-founded belief in the African-American community. Justice fighters for blacks and the defenders of the earth have tended to ignore each other in their public discourse and practice. Their separation from each other is unfortunate, because they are fighting the same enemy - human beings' domination of each other and nature.

(relating to, or concerned with, ecology ; beneficial to the natural environment, said of policies, methods, practices or products)
(to concern oneself about them or be interested in them) care for는 ‘좋아하다, 돌보다’ 등의 뜻으로 쓰인다.
3. at best :
(a worry or a cause of worry ; interest or a subject of interest ; someone’s business or responsibility)
6. than they do about ~ : do는 care를 받는 대동사.
(well-found : built on secure foundations ; justified ; based on good grounds)
8. fighters for blacks : 흑인을 위해(for) 싸우는 이들.
9. the defenders of the earth :
10. Their separation from each other : their의 ‘그들’이 서로로부터 갈라져 있는 상태.
11. human beings' domination of each other and nature :

The logic that led to slavery and segregation in the Americas, colonization and apartheid in Africa, and the rule of white supremacy throughout the world is the same one that leads to the exploitation of animals and the ravaging of nature. It is a mechanistic and instrumental logic that defines everything and everybody in terms of their contribution to the development and defense of white world supremacy. People who fight against white racism but fail to connect it to the degradation of the earth are anti-ecological, whether they know it or not. People who struggle against ecological injustice but do not incorporate in it a disciplined and sustained fight against white supremacy are racists, whether they acknowledge it or not. The fight for justice cannot be segregated but must be integrated with the fight for life in all its forms.

(the exploration of the validity or otherwise of arguments and reasoning, where the aim is not to prove or disprove the legitimacy of statements or premises, but rather to show that the underlying thinking behind what is being proposed is well-founded)
2. the logic that led to ~ : ~ 로 이어졌던 논리.
3. the same one that leads to ~ : ~로 이어지는 것과 동일한 논리(one=logic).
(to set apart or isolate ; to separate out into a group or groups) segregation은 ‘인종차별.’
(an official state policy, especially that operating in South Africa until 1992, of keeping different races segregated in such areas as housing, education, sport, etc, together with the privileging of one race, in the case of South Africa the White minority, over any others ; any segregationist policy)
(to take unfair advantage of something or someone so as to achieve one’s own aims ; to make good use of something)
(cause extensive damage to a place ; to destroy it)
8. the exploitation of animals and the ravaging of nature :
9. It is a mechanistic and instrumental logic that defines everything and everybody in terms of ~ : It … that의 강조 구문.
10. in terms of their contribution to ~ :
11. People who fight against ~ but fail to…
12. People who struggle against ~ but do not incorporate in it …
13. a disciplined and sustained fight against ~ : ~에 대항한 싸움이 오랜 기간 훈련되고(disciplined) 지속되어(sustained) 왔음을 알 수 있다.
14. life in all its forms :

The leaders in the mainstream environmental movement are mostly middle- and upper-class whites who are unprepared culturally and intellectually to dialogue with angry blacks. The leaders in the African-American community are leery of talking about anything with whites that will distract from the menacing reality of racism. What both groups fail to realize is how much they need each other in the struggle for justice, peace, and the integrity of creation.

1. who are unprepared … to ~ : ~하는 게 준비되어 있지 않은. 앞의 middle- and upper- class whites를 수식한다.
2. are leery of ~ : ~에 대해 의심하며 조심하는 것. (to be wary or suspicious of them or it)
3. leery of talking about anything with whites that will distract from ~ : ~로부터 ‘시선을 분산시켜 혼란스럽게 만들’(will distract) 어떤 것(anything)에 대해서도 백인과 대화하는 것을 경계하다.
4. the menacing reality of racism : (menace : to show an intention to damage or harm someone)
5. What both groups fail to realize : 양 진영이 깨닫지 못하는 것. fail to ~ 는 ‘~ 하는 데 실패하다.’
6. how much they need each other :
7. in the struggle for ~ : ~을 쟁취하기 위한 싸움에서.
(strict adherence to moral values and principles ; uprightness ; the quality or state of being whole and unimpaired)

I want to challenge the black freedom movement to take a critical look at itself through the lens of the ecological movement and also challenge the ecological movement to critique itself through a serious and ongoing engagement of racism in American history and culture. Hopefully, we can break the silence and promote genuine solidarity between the two groups and thereby enhance the quality of life for the whole inhabited earth - humankind and otherkind.

1. challenge ~ to …
2. take a critical look at ~ : ~에 대해 비판적인 바라봄을 취하다.
3. to critique : 여기서 critique도 to 부정사의 동사로 쓰였다. (critique : critical analysis ; the art of criticism)
(the act of engaging or state of being engaged ; a battle)
5. through a serious and ongoing engagement of racism in American history and culture :
(mutual support and unity of interests, aims and actions among members of a group)
앞의 we can이 이어지는 문장.
8. the whole inhabited earth - humankind and otherkind :

THE SURVIVAL OF THE EARTH is a moral issue for everybody. If we do not save the earth from human destructive behavior, no one will survive. That fact alone ought to be enough to inspire people of all colors to join hands in the fight for a just and sustainable planet.

1. a moral issue for everybody :
2. That fact alone ought to be enough to ~ :
3. inspire ~ to join hands : ~
4. a just and sustainable planet :

But what is absent from much of the talk about the environment in first-world countries is a truly radical critique of the culture most responsible for the ecological crisis. This is especially true among white ethicists and theologians in the United States. In most of the essays and books I have read, there is hardly a hint that perhaps whites could learn something of how we got into this ecological mess from those who have been the victims of white world supremacy. How can we create a genuinely mutual ecological dialogue between whites and people of color if one party acts as if they have all the power and knowledge? Do we have any reason to believe that the culture most responsible for the ecological crisis will also provide the moral and intellectual resources for the earth's liberation?

1. what is absent from ~ : ~에서 빠져 있는 것.
2. the talk about the environment in first-world countries : first-world countries의 talk인지 environment인지는 대체로 문맥상으로 판단한다.
3. a truly radical critique of ~ : (critique : concerning or relating to the basic nature or root of something ; fundamental ; intrinsic ; far-reaching ; thoroughgoing ; in favour of or tending to produce thoroughgoing or extreme political and social reforms)
4. there is hardly a hint that perhaps whites could learn ~ :
(an untidy or dirty state ; a state of disorder or confusion ; a badly damaged state)
6. of how we got into ~ : 우리가 어떻게 ~(한 상태) 속으로 이르렀는지에 대해(of).
7. this ecological mess :
8. learn something of how ~ from those who … : …
9. How can we ~ if one party acts as if …
10. Do we have any reason to believe that ~ : 우리는 that 이하를 믿는 어떤 이유가 있는가?
11. provide the moral and intellectual resources for the earth's liberation :

Blacks and other minorities are often asked why they are not involved in the mainstream ecological movement. To white theologians and ethicists I ask, why are you not involved in the dialogue on race? Only when white theologians realize that a fight against racism is a fight for their humanity will we be able to create a coalition of blacks, whites, and other people of color in the struggle to save the earth.

(to require as a necessary part ; to cause them to take part or be implicated in it)
2. will we be able to ~ : will이 도치된 것.
(a combination or temporary alliance, especially between political parties)
4. in the struggle to save the earth :
