지난번 집을 사게 되었을 때 저는 처음으로 학교의 질에 관심을 갖게 되었습니다. 우리 집은 좋은 학군에 있지만 우리 아이가 다니는 학교는 '인정받는(recognized)' 학교이지, '대표(exemplary)' 학교는 아닙니다. 우리 집을 방문한 한국 사람 중 한 명이 제 아내보고 "여기 안 좋은 동네 아녜요?"라고 했다가 아내의 기분을 상하게 한 적이 있습니다. 그 사람이 무슨 근거로 그런 말을 했는지 모르겠지만 저는 우리 동네 학교가 참 좋다고 확신합니다. 

학군을 위해 재산세를 많이 내니 학교는 쓸 돈이 많겠죠. 학군에서는 예산을 공평하게 쪼개 학교마다 대략 비슷한 자원을 나누어 쓰도록 합니다. 그런데 왜 우리 아들 학교는 '인정받는' 정도의 학교이고, 단지 몇 마일 올라가면 '대표' 학교일까요? 그게 그렇게 상관이 있습니까.

일단 학교가 좋으면 많은 사람이 그들의 자녀를 그곳에 보내기 원합니다. 우리 집에서 가까운 아파트 빌딩 앞에 커다랗게 현수막이 붙어 있습니다. 그 현수막에는 집세나 부대시설 자랑은 없고 학군만 어디라고 나와 있습니다. 마치 다른 것은 볼 필요 없이 학군만 보고 사람이 살 곳을 정하는 것처럼 보입니다. '좋은' 동네임에도 불구하고 제 아들 학군에는 많은 다른 사회·경제적 계급에 속한 아이들이 있습니다. 집을 사기 전 학교의 질을 고려했지만, 저는 집을 먼저 고르고 학교를 보았고 괜찮다는 결정을 했지, 학교를 먼저 보지는 않았습니다.

제가 알기로 많은 한국 사람들이 자녀들의 학교로 대표 학교를 찾는데, 저는 그럴 필요가 없다고 생각합니다. 학군이 다르면 학교마다 큰 차이가 있을 수 있지만 한 학군 내에 학교들은 거의 같습니다. 각각의 학교마다 다른 점은 보통 학교 근처 동네에 사는 학생들의 차이입니다. 우리 부모들이 학교 밖에서 자녀들에게 모든 기회를 주고 아이들로 하여금 교육의 중요성을 인식시키고, 웬만한 학군만 제공한다면, 아이들은 잘하게 되어 있습니다.

자녀들이 다니는 공립학교가 '대표' 학교냐, 아니냐의 지위에 대한 집착은 보통 아이들이 들어갈 대학의 이름에까지 이어집니다. 제가 뉴욕에 살 때 만난 한 한국의 어르신은 무슨 말씀을 하실 때마다 그 아들이 하버드대학에 다닌다는 자랑이셨습니다. 의심할 여지없이 하버드는 좋은 학교지만, 미국에는 다른 많은 학교들도 좋습니다.

개인적으로 저는 학부로 오쉬카쉬에 있는 위스콘신 주립 대학에 다녔는데 분명 일류대는 아니었습니다. 고등학교 재학 시절 저는 대학에 가고 싶다는 확신도 없었고 대학 가라고 압력을 넣는 부모님도 개의치 않았습니다. 결과적으로 어느 대학에도 갈 준비가 거의 되어 있지 않아서 집 근처에 있는 학교를 가게 되었지요. 그런데 대학 2학년이 되면서 저 스스로 교육이 중요하다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그 이후로는 매일 아침 6시에 일어나 공부를 했는데 시험 전날에만 공부하는 것이 아니라 매일 공부에 전념했습니다. 그해 처음으로 장학생 명단에 올랐는데 전에 한 번도 제가 이루지 못한 일이었죠. 운이 좋아 학교에서 제게 개인적으로 관심을 두는 많은 교수들을 만날 수 있게 되었습니다. 화학, 수학, 경제학, 역사 교수들이 전부 저더러 전공을 바꾸라고 난리였죠. 학생으로서 교수들의 눈에 띄는 것은 중요한데 실제로 제 인생에 큰 영향을 미쳤습니다. 저는 별로 좋은 학교는 아니지만 우수한 성적으로 졸업을 할 수 있었고, 이 성적으로 '좋은' 대학의 박사 과정에 들어갈 수 있었습니다.

저는 박사 학위를 따기 위해 스토니 브룩의 뉴욕 주립대(현재 스토니 브룩대학으로 이름이 바뀌었죠)를 다녔습니다. 그곳에 있는 동안 저는 '좋은' 학교들이 어떻게 운영되는지 보았습니다. 대학원생들이 많은 수업을 강의했습니다. 박사 과정 3년차가 되었을 때 저도 강의를 하게 되었습니다. 많은 학부생들은 교수들을 볼 기회가 없었습니다. 오해하지 마셔야 할 것은, 나름대로 강의를 잘하기는 했지만 여전히 배우는 과정에 있었고, 저는 학생에 불과했습니다. 제가 알기로 아이비리그 학교에서는 이런 상황이 더 극심합니다. 교수들이 연구에 전념하느라 바쁜 탓입니다. 그렇다면 왜 아이비리그 학교들이 그렇게 평판이 좋은 것일까요? 학생들을 위한 대단한 기회를 제공한다기보다 아이비리그 학교들이 처음부터 까다롭게 아주 훌륭한 학생들만 뽑기 때문입니다. 더 나아가 아이비리그의 학비가 어마어마한데 그 비용만큼 돌아오는 게 있을까 하는 것입니다.

우리 모두 아이들을 위해서 최고의 것을 원합니다. 그러나 어떤 때는 그 최고의 것이 피아노 레슨을 더 시키고 공부를 더 시키는 것보다는, 애들을 애들이 되도록 놔두는 것이 아닐까요. 애들보고 자꾸 빨리 크라고 재촉하는 것보다 말이죠. 저도 부모의 한 사람으로서 우리 아이들의 장래를 위해 제가 진정으로 바라는 딱 한 가지는 그들의 행복인데, 그 행복이 그저 주립 학교에서 시작될지도 모르겠습니다.

Column 33 The Name Value of an Education

The last time I was looking at houses to buy was the first time that I began to pay attention to the quality of schools. My house is in a good school district but the actual school that my child attends is 'recognized' rather than 'exemplary'. A Korean visitor to our house said to my wife, 'Isn't this a bad neighborhood?' and upset my wife quite a bit. I don’t know what made our visitor think that way about our neighborhood, but I'm convinced that the school is excellent. I pay a lot of property taxes to the school district, so I know that they have money to work with. The district splits the money fairly evenly among all the schools so each school has about the same resources to work with. So why is my son's school only recognized while the one a few miles away is exemplary? Does it matter?

Once a school is good, many people want to send their children there. There is an apartment building down the road from my house that has a big advertising sign out front. However, the advertising sign does not tell about the rent or the amenities, only the school district, as though the only reason someone would choose to live one place over another is the school district. Despite being in a 'good' neighborhood, my son’s school contains children from many different socioeconomic classes. Though I did consider the quality of the school before buying the house, I picked the house first, then looked at the school and decided it was fine, not the other way around.

I know that many Korean parents are obsessed with the designation of exemplary on their children's schools but I don’t think they need to be. Though there can be fairly major differences between schools in different school districts, the schools within a district are pretty much the same. The differences among these individual schools often come down to the students that live in the neighborhood around the school. As long as we parents give our children every opportunity outside of school, let our children know that we value education, and give our children a good enough school district, they'll do great.

This obsession with the 'exemplary' status of our children’s public schools often carries on to the name of the university the children attend as well. I remember meeting an older Korean man when I lived in New York, and all he could talk about was the fact that his son was attending Harvard. I have no doubt Harvard is a good school, but many other schools are also great in America.

Personally, I went to a state school as an undergraduate, the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh, definitely not 'top' school. I wasn’t even sure that I wanted to go to college during high school and it didn’t matter how hard my parents pushed me toward college. As a result, I hardly prepared myself to go to college and I ended up going to a school close to my hometown. However, during my sophomore year I decided that I personally felt an education was important. After that, I got up at 6:00 every morning and studied, not just the night before exams, but every night. I got on the honor role for the first time that year, a feat I had never accomplished before. At the school I was lucky enough to meet a lot of professors that took an interest in me personally. I had professors in chemistry, math, economics and history all trying to make me switch majors. The attention from a professor is important for a student and it actually made a difference in my life. I was able to graduate from a not great school with an excellent record. A record that was good enough to get me into a “good” university for my PhD.

I attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook (now called Stony Brook University) to get my PhD. While there I got to see how things work at a 'good' school (Tier 1). Many of the classes were taught by graduate students. By my third year I myself was teaching classes. Many undergraduate students never got to meet any professors. Don't get me wrong, I know I provided great classes, but I was still learning to teach and was only a student myself. I know that this situation is even more extreme at Ivy League schools, because the professors are too busy doing research. So why do Ivy League schools have such a good reputation?  Not because they provide such great opportunities for the students, but because Ivy League schools are so selective that only really good students go there in the first place. As a further argument, the cost of an Ivy League education is huge, a cost that might not be justified by the returns received.

We all want the best for kids. However, sometimes the best thing is not another piano lesson or more studying, sometimes the best thing is to let kids be kids, don't rush them to grow up. As a parent I can truly say that the only thing I truly want for my children’s future is their happiness and that happiness might begin at a state school.
