비교 문화 심리학 분야에서 가장 명백한 사실 중 하나는 동양과 서양 문화 사이에 커다란 차이가 있다는 것입니다. 유럽과 미국을 지배하는 서구 문명은 좀 더 개인적인 반면, 한국과 중국 일본 같은 동양 문화는 더 집단적인 경향을 보입니다. 서구에서는 '나'라는 말을 훨씬 더 쓰는 반면 동양의 사람들은 '우리'라는 말을 더 많이 씁니다. 비교 문화에 따르면, 이러한 기본적 태도가 동양과 서양의 거의 모든 차이를 설명해줍니다. 그러나 부분적으로는 유럽식 제국주의 결과 덕분에, 전체적으로는 위성 텔레비전의 소개로 더 강력해진 할리우드의 영향 때문에, 이 세상 대부분이 서구화 되어 가고 있습니다. 마실만한 물조차 없는 아프리카의 아무리 가난한 시골에서도 코카콜라를 사는 게 가능합니다.
잘 알려진 한 심리학 연구에 따르면, 미국 심리학자가 피지(남태평양에 있는, 섬으로 이루어진 국가)에서 이상적인 여성상에 대한 변화를 연구했는데, 피지 문화에서는 전통적으로 몸집이 큰 여성을 이상적으로 여긴다는 것이었습니다. 비만은 그 여성에게 먹을 것이 충분할 정도로 부유하다는 것을 상징하기 때문입니다. 포장 음식과 냉동식품의 소개와 더불어 이러한 상징은 더 이상 의미가 없어졌는데, 사실 비만은 서구 문명에서는 빈곤과 연결이 됩니다. 싼 음식은 기름기가 제일 많고 건강에 가장 좋지 않기 때문입니다. 서구 텔레비전이 도입 되었을 때 이상적인 몸매에 대한 개념이 비만에서 완전히 바뀌게 되었으며 비정상적으로 날씬한 바비 인형에 훨씬 가깝게 되었습니다. 바로 이것이 미국에서 우리가 우상화하는 몸매입니다. 이러한 변화는 비교적 최근에 일어난 것입니다. 제가 대학 시절 알고 지내던 피지 출신의 나이가 좀 있던 한 남자는 미국에서 아주 행복해 했는데, 그 이유가 미국에 사는 많은 비만 여성들이 그에게는 아주 매력적으로 보였기 때문입니다. 장담하건대 다음 세대는 이 사람처럼 생각하지 않을 것입니다.
전 세계가 서구 세계를 따라 가는 것에 대해 어쩌면 우리는 의문을 제기해야 할지도 모릅니다. 파리의 최고 패션 디자이너들이 요새 유행은 이것이라고 말하는 듯 보이기는 해도 사실은 미국의 회사들이 세계가 입을 옷을 결정합니다. 개인적으로 제 생각에는 세계가 입을 옷을 미국에 맡기는 것은 별로 좋은 일이 아닌 것 같습니다. 또한 미국의 패스트푸드가 여기저기에 들어서고 있는데, 우리가 먹는 음식 중에 가장 건강에 좋지 않은 부류가 이것이라는 자각이 커져가고 있습니다. 미제라고 해서 다 좋은 건 아니지요.
한국전쟁 전 한국의 문화는 아주 전통적이고 농업 위주였습니다. 한국전쟁이 끝난 뒤 서구 문명이 들어오면서 한국 사람들은 서구 양식에 집착하게 되었습니다. 전통적으로 아시아 국가들 중 가장 고립적이고 폐쇄적이던 중국조차 2008년 올림픽을 개최했고, 이를 통해 개방이 이어질 것입니다. 1988년 서울 올림픽이나 1964년의 도쿄 올림픽처럼 말이죠.
한국의 경제 기반은 1960년대에 말 그대로 터져 나왔습니다. 한국 고속도로의 복합성과 전철 체계를 보고 저는 참 놀랐습니다. 한국 경제는 서구 방식의 대기업 체제 도입으로 크게 일어나게 되었습니다. 좋은 것은 물론 나쁜 것까지도, 결혼 전 성(性)에서 이혼까지 한국 사회는 모든 것에 있어서 미국의(서구의) 모델을 따르게 되었습니다. 결혼 전 성과 이혼율이 아직 미국에서만큼의 비율을 보이고 있지는 않지만 점점 이에 가까워지고 있습니다. 미국인으로서, 제가 한국에 가면 잘 지냅니다. 모든 간판이 한국어와 영어로 되어 있고 전철에서 안내 방송도 양국의 언어로 나옵니다. 제 생각에 위스콘신과 텍사스 사이의 차이가 서울과 텍사스의 차이보다 더 클 것 같습니다.
여러해 전에 제가 미래를 배경으로 한 소설을 하나 읽었는데, 이 미래에서는 문화들이 서로 합쳐져 전쟁이 종식되었습니다. 소설 속 사람들은 인종적으로 통합되어 서로 아주 비슷하게 묘사되어 있었습니다. 이것이 미화되어, 세상은 서로의 차이를 버리고 색깔을 구분하지 않는 것으로 나와 있었는데 저는 다른 것을 보았습니다. 모두가 똑같다니요. 세상이 돌아가려면 다양성이 필요합니다. 모두가 똑같다면 우리는 결코 변화하지 않겠지요. 저는 한 개체로서 우리가 모두 다르다는 사실을 받아들입니다. 그리고 서구의 미디어가 우리에게 말하는 것 전부를 받아들이지는 않기를 바랍니다. 자기 자신이 되라는 말입니다. 그것이 한국인이건 미국인이건, 중국인이건, 피지 사람이건 말이죠.

Column 36 The Westernization of the World
In the field of cross-cultural psychology, one of the most indisputable facts is that there is a large split between Eastern and Western cultures. Cultures from the west, predominately Europe and America, tend to be more individualistic while cultures in the east, such as Korea, China, and Japan, tend to be more collectivistic. In the west we use the words 'me', 'I', and 'mine' much more often whereas people in the east are more likely to use words such as 'we', 'us', and 'ours'.
According to cross-cultural psychology, these basic outlooks account for almost all differences between eastern and western societies. However, partly as a result of European colonialism, but mostly as the result of the influences of Hollywood which have gotten even stronger with the introduction of satellite television, most of the world is becoming westernized. Even in the poorest villages in Africa, in places where clean water is not available, it is possible to buy a Coke.
In a well known psychological study, an American psychologist studied the changing assessment of the ideal woman in Fiji (an island nation in the South Pacific). Traditional Fijian culture glorified large females. Obesity was a sign that the women had plenty to eat and were therefore wealthy (this same relationship held in Korea until recently). With the introduction of prepackaged and frozen foods, this assumption no longer holds true and, in fact, obesity is linked to poverty in western nations because the least expensive foods are the fattiest and least healthy.
When western television was introduced, the ideal body image shifted dramatically away from obesity and much closer to the impossibly thin Barbie doll shape which we in America seem to glamorize. However, this shift occurred relatively recently. In college I knew an older man from Fiji who was so happy in America because he found that there were many obese women which he found to be particularly attractive. I'd bet the next generation doesn’t think like him!
Though the entire world seems to be embracing the western world, maybe we should be questioning why. The top fashion designers of Paris supposedly tell us what is trendy to wear, but in truth the companies in America define what the world wears. Personally, I don't think America's addition to the world’s clothing choices has been a good thing. Additionally, American fast food is popping up everywhere, yet there is an increasing realization that American fast food is pretty much the least healthy food choices we can. Just because something is American does not make it good.
Before the Korean War, Korean culture was very traditional and farm-based. Following the Korean War, the doors flew open to western ideas and Koreans latched onto many of them. Even China, traditionally the most isolated and closed of all the Asian countries is looking forward to the 2008 Olympics which is intended to be an opening up to the west, much like the 1988 Olympics in Seoul was as was the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. The infrastructure of Korea literally exploded in the 1960s. I was very impressed when I saw the complexity of the highway and subway systems in Korea. The Korean economy really took off with the introduction of the western style megacorporations. For better or for worse, Korean social regulations involving everything from premarital sex to divorce have also moved toward American (and western) models. Acceptance of premarital sex and divorce rates haven't yet reached the heights seen in America, but they’re getting there. As an American, I can go to Korea and get by just fine, all signs are written in Korean and English and the subway announces stops in both languages. I think there might be more differences between Wisconsin (where I grew up) and Texas than between Seoul and Texas.
Many years ago I read a science fiction story set in the future, a future in which cultures had integrated with each other and eliminated wars. The people in this story were described as being racially integrated and very similar to each other. It was intended to be a beautiful sentiment, the world had set aside their differences and become colorblind, but I saw it differently. Everyone the same. The world needs diversity to keep it moving. If everyone was the same, we would never have change. I for one accept these differences and encourage everyone to not accept every thing the western media tells us. Just be yourself, even if that means being Korean or American or Chinese or Fijian or….
