▲ 미국에는 50개 주가 있습니다. 각 주마다 생활 환경이나 문화가 많이 다르죠. 각 나라에서 온 이민자의 영향의 큽니다.

많은 미국의 이민자는 미국이 실제로 굉장히 크다는 사실을 깨닫지 못할 때가 많습니다. 미국에는 50개 주가 있는데 여러분이 사는 곳은 단 한 주니까요. 그 말은 구경 다닐 49개의 다른 주들이 있다는 뜻입니다(여러분이 살고 있는 주의 다른 지역은 말할 것도 없이요). 미국은 여러 가지 모습이 그 지역마다 다릅니다. 미국의 역사는 그저 몇 세기만 거슬러 올라가면 되는데 그 짧은 시간 안에 많은 역사와 문화가 발전했습니다. 미국은 거대한 땅인 만큼 각 지역마다 그 독특한 역사를 가지고 있는데, 이는 과거 그 지역에 정착한 각각의 이민자들의 특색이 만들어 낸 산물입니다.

제가 이것을 처음으로 경험하게 된 것은 펜실베이니아 주의 피츠버그에서였습니다. 이 도시의 기원은 프랑스와 인디안 간의 전쟁인데 이곳이 세 개의 다른 강을 끼고 있는 전략지였기 때문이었습니다. 포트 피트가 아직 그 자리에 세 강이 만나는 지점에 존재 합니다. 그 후 세계 도처에서 온 이민자들이 수년에 걸쳐 피츠버그에 정착하였고 각각 동네에 모여 살면서 이것이 동네마다 독특한 특색으로 발전했습니다. 제가 살던 동네는 '스쿼럴 힐(다람쥐 언덕)'이라고 불리었는데, 유태인들에 의해 정착된 지역으로 그 건물이나 길거리 이름에 그들의 유산이 새겨져 있었습니다. 제 아파트 창문 너머로 전통적인 옷을 차려 입은 유태인 가족들이 안식일을 맞아 함께 예배당으로 걸어가는 것을 볼 수 있었습니다. 다른 동네는 완전히 폴란드 사람들에 의해 정착되어 있었습니다. 그 외에도 피츠버그 도시 전체에 100여 년 동안 이 도시의 경제를 주름잡던 예전 철강  산업의 잔재가 남아 있었습니다. 

미국은 각 주와 지역 그 자체로 작은 국가를 형성하고 있는 것과 같습니다. 지역마다 지리적 여건과 기후가 다를 뿐 아니라 전통적인 음식과 종교도 다릅니다. 남부 미시시피와 루이지애나의 문화는 그 나름의 산물로서 프랑스와 카리브해의 다양한 문화가 섞여 있습니다. 이 지역엘 가면 케이준 음식이나 부두교, 재즈 음악을 이 나라에 들여온 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 말일 성도 예수 그리스도 교회(몰몬교)는 유타 주의 솔트레이크시티에 정착되어, 몰몬교 성막(Mormon Tabernacle)으로 유명합니다. 미국의 중서부 지역으로 불리는 미네소타, 미시간, 위스콘신 주(제 고향이죠)에는 초기 정착인들은 주로 독일과 스칸디나비아 출신들입니다. 이 지역의 대표적인 음식은 고기와 감자인데 제가 먹고 자란 음식이고 당연히 제일 좋아하는 음식이기도 합니다. 진짜 미국의 낙농장들을 이 지역들에서 볼 수 있는데, 제 고향 근처에서 제 아내가 생전 처음으로 진짜 젖소를 보았을 때 얼마나 좋아했는지가 생각나네요. 제가 위스콘신을 떠난 후로 폴카 음악을 듣는 사람을 한 사람도 보지 못한 것 같아요(소가 젖을 더 많이 내게 한다고 믿거든요).

제가 미국인이라는 사실에도 불구하고, 그 지역을 방문해 보지 않았거나 살아 보지 않았다면 미국에 대해서 놓치거나 알지 못했을 것이 많이 있었을 것입니다. 제가 뉴욕에 살았을 때 저는 문화의 여러 가지 양상을 보았습니다. 뉴욕 지역은 유태인들이 정착해서 제가 처음으로 냉동이 아닌 베이글을 맛보기도 했지요. 먹어 보니까 진짜 뉴욕 베이글을 좋아하게 되었고 '피로기(pierogies)'라고 하는 또 다른 유명한 유태인 음식 맛에도 폭 빠지게 되었습니다.

제가 미주리에 살게 되면서 처음으로 '바이블 벨트'라는 것을 경험하게 되었습니다. 바이블 벨트란 미국의 다른 지역보다 종교가 사회적으로 훨씬 더 중요한 역할을 하는 일련의 지역을 말합니다. 제가 처음으로 미주리 주로 운전해 들어가던 날 '예수님은 당신을 사랑하십니다'라는 간판을 도로 옆에서 보았던 것이 아직도 기억나네요. 텍사스에 1년 남짓 살다 보니 카우보이 문화가 가장 인상 깊다는 말을 안 할 수가 없네요. 바로 제가 사는 곳 포트워스에 스톡야드라 불리는 지역에서는 연례 로데오를 포함해 온갖 종류의 카우보이 축제와 행사들이 있습니다.

나가서 구경 좀 다니세요. 주간의 도로가 잘 되어 있기 때문에 미국은 그 어느 때보다 작아지고 돌아다니는 것이 쉬워졌습니다. 집에서 찾아보시면 특별 행사와 축제들이 많아서 어떤 것은 바로 여러분의 동네에서 찾으실 수 있을지도 몰라요.

제가 아는 한 한국 가정은 미국 탐험의 정수를 진짜 마음에 새겼습니다. 1년 전 쯤에 이곳에 와서 이들은 캘리포니아, 뉴멕시코, 애리조나, 네바다, 플로리다, 뉴욕, 펜실베이니아, 캐나다까지 운전해 다녔습니다. 그들은 미국이 보여줄 수 있는 많은 것을 보았는데, 제가 제안하는 것보다 훨씬 더 야심찬 것 같긴 합니다. 미국에 정말 볼 게 많고 할 게 많지 않습니까.

Column 30 Explore America

Many immigrants to America don’t really realize just how large America really is. America has 50 states, and you only live in one. That means there are 49 other states to explore (not to mention all the different parts of the state you are living in). There are many aspects of America that are different from place to place. The history of America only goes back a few centuries, but in that short time a lot of history and culture has developed. America is HUGE and each part of America has its own unique history, often the product of the unique group of immigrants that settled there in the past.

I got to experience this first hand when I lived in Pittsburgh, PA. The city has its origins during the French and Indian war, due to its strategic location along three different rivers. Fort Pitt is still there at the point where the three rivers converge. Then, over the years immigrant groups from different parts of the world settled in Pittsburgh, living predominantly in isolated neighborhoods that then developed the unique character of these groups. I lived in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood which had been settled by Jewish people who left their mark on the style of buildings and names of the streets. Looking out my apartment window, I could watch Jewish families dressed in traditional clothing walking to synagogue to observe the Sabbath. There was another neighborhood that was entirely Polish. Additionally, all over the city were remnants of the old steel mills that drove Pittsburgh's economy for a hundred years. 

Each state and region in America is often like a little country in and of itself. Different regions have not only different geography and climate, but different peoples as well with unique traditional foods and religions. The culture of southern Mississippi and Louisiana is a unique product, combining the cultures of the French with the various cultures of the Caribbean. Coming from this area we find a few unique contributions to this country including Cajun food, voodoo, and Jazz music. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) settled in the region of Salt Lake City in Utah creating such wonders as the Mormon Tabernacle. In the upper Midwest regions of America, including Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin (where I’m originally from) the original settlers were primarily from Germany and Scandinavia. In this area the predominant foods involve meat and potatoes, which naturally I grew up with and therefore is my favorite type of food.  You can see real American dairy farms in these areas. I remember how excited my wife was when she saw a real milk cow for the first time in her life near my hometown. I don't think I've ever heard anyone in America listening to Polka music since I left Wisconsin (Polka music is supposed to make milk cows produce more milk)!

Despite the fact that I am American, there would be many things I would have missed or wouldn't have known about in America unless I had visited or lived in that particular area. When I lived in New York I found a lot of unique aspects of the culture. The area was heavily settled by Jewish people and I was able to eat my first bagel that wasn’t previously frozen. It turns out I loved New York Bagels and also fell in love with the pierogies, another famous Jewish food. When living in Missouri I got my first glimpse of the 'Bible Belt'. The Bible Belt refers to a stretch of America where religion plays a much more dominant role in society than it does in other areas of America. I still remember the day I drove into Missouri for the first time and saw the 'Jesus Loves You' sign by the side of the road. Having lived in Texas for a bit more than a year, I must say the cowboy culture impresses me the most. Right in Fort Worth, where I live, is an area called the Stockyards where all kinds of cowboy festivals and activities can be found, including the annual rodeo.

Get out and explore. Due to an incredible interstate system (but woefully, no national mass transit system) America is smaller and more accessible than it has ever been before. Do some homework and you will find that there are special events and festivals, some of them might even be right in your neighborhood. One Korean family I know really takes the notion of exploring America to heart. Since moving here a little more than a year ago, they have driven to California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, and even Canada. They have seen much of what America has to offer, which seems even more ambitious than I am suggesting, but boy there is a lot to see and do in America.
