Column 32 Use American Resources

I was on a business trip to Scotland one time, but had plenty of time to see tourist things as well. While visiting Edinburgh Castle I was approached by many American people that just wanted to say hi to an American. These same people probably would not approach me in America. When I was in London on a different trip I was approached by a man from Australia asking if I was Australian. I guess he missed home too! When in Korea, similar things happen. After being away from home for a while it is inevitable that we miss those things we are familiar with. After being in Korea for a few weeks, I get an overwhelming urge for American food after all those meals of Korean food. When that urge hits, I go to the Burger King restaurant near Kyung Hi University in Seoul. A quick fix of burgers and fries and I'm good for another week or so.

In all of these examples, I was merely visiting these places, not trying to live there. I can only imagine that people would miss their birth country much more if they knew that they were never going to live there again.

Maybe that's why many immigrant groups that move to America cluster together into pockets. Many immigrants from the Middle East settled in Michigan. Many immigrants from Somalia live in Minneapolis, MN. San Francisco has a very famous China town. Los Angeles has a huge Korea Town while many of the Koreans living in the Dallas/Fort Worth area live near Carrollton. By living near each other, immigrants can look to each other for social support and help. However, living closely and associating only with members of an immigrant group can wall off the group, ensuring that they will not truly fit into America for at least another generation. What a shame, America has a lot of great things to offer.

You should take advantage of all the things America has to offer. For example there are many things you and your children could enjoy and learn through American churches. You don't need to speak perfect English, you don't even need to be a Christian. There are always plenty of American Christians who will welcome you and help you in everyway they can. American churches often have Wednesday evening programs which include services or bible study programs for adults as well as programs for children. If you go to a Korean church on Sunday, you could take advantage of American churches on Wednesday to experience American culture. Many of these churches also have bible studies for women going on every weekday morning, often even providing childcare. You can improve your English and learn American culture by joining them. Though it might feel hard to fit in at first, most of these groups are glad to welcome newcomers and you don't even need to say anything if you feel shy. Just be there and observe!

Another way to enjoy life in America is to celebrate American holidays as well as your own. Every year I invite Korean people to my home for Thanksgiving (the 4th Thursday in November) so that they can experience a traditional American Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a day when we give thanks to God for all of the blessings we have been given and share these blessings with others. Though my wife cooks the food, I supervise to make sure it is made right. My wife has developed her own recipe over the years to bake turkey with herbs and olive oil and it's the best turkey!  We eat Korean food all year round in our home, but I make sure this is the day we do everything in an American way. Though everyone's family differs a little bit, on Thanksgiving it is traditional to eat turkey with stuffing and cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, corn, and many other side dishes. For dessert we usually have pumpkin pie. Many other American families are happy to open their homes up for this occasion too, so if someone offers, it seems like a great way to help you understand America and American people a little bit better. Or why don't you do it first rather than waiting for somebody to come up to you? Invite Americans you want to make friends with to your home, they will love that.

I know that many Korean people, often due to limited English, are afraid to interact with American people. I know that many Korean people at the Korean church I attend want to talk with me, but are afraid. Other than an occasional inconsiderate person, I believe that the majority of American people are understanding and very considerate towards those who try to get involved. Besides, the more you practice, the better your English will get, which makes it easier to take advantage of all that America has to offer.
