사실 저조차도 그런 생각을 했었다니까요. 저는 범죄가 거의 없는(어렸을 때 자전거를 한번 도둑맞아 보긴 했지만) 위스콘신 주에서 자랐습니다. 처음으로 뉴욕에 갔을 때 공항을 나서기도 전에 강도한테 당하는 거 아닌가 하고 걱정하기도 했었죠. 그때 나의 두려움이 얼마나 바보 같은 것이었는지 이제야 깨닫게 됩니다. 미국이나 미국인들에 대한 아내의 두려움도 근거 없는 것이었음을 아내도 깨닫기 바랄뿐입니다.
비슷한 경우로 많은 사람들이 심지어는 미국 사람들조차 미국 어디에서나 범죄가 터지는 끔찍한 장소인 것처럼 생각합니다. 대중매체가 이런 믿음을 조장한답니다. 뉴스는 대부분 나쁜 일에만 초점을 맞춥니다. 끊임없이 나쁜 일들만 터지는 것 같죠. 부모로서 저는 특히 자주 보도되는 아이들 납치 사건에 귀를 기울입니다. 몇 주 전에 터진 미주리 주 납치 사건이 온통 뉴스를 도배했었죠.
제 말을 오해하지 마세요. 그런 일들은 절대 터져서는 안 되는 비극적인 사건입니다. 하지만 뉴스에서 다루지 않는 것이 무엇이냐면, 절대 다수의 아이들은 납치 되지 않는다는 사실입니다. 아주 극소수로 일어나는 일이죠. 한정된 납치 사건들은 뉴스를 장악하며 끊임없이 보도됩니다. 미국에서의 범죄율은 현재 역사상 가장 낮습니다. 하지만 미국에는 3억이 넘는 많은 인구가 살고 있으니, 어디선가는 항상 나쁜 일이 일어나게 마련이죠. 바로 그곳에 뉴스의 초점이 맞추어지는 것입니다. 사실 납치당하는 것보다 번개 맞을 확률이 더 높습니다.
본론으로 더 들어가면 미국 아이들도 많은 사람이 생각하는 것만큼 나쁘지 않다는 것입니다. 제가 알기로 미국에 있는 한국의 부모님들은 자녀의 미국 친구들에 대해 걱정을 많이 합니다. 나쁜 미국 친구들에게 영향을 받을까 걱정하는 거죠. 미국의 일부 십대들이 마약을 하고, 총을 소지하고, 성관계를 갖는 것은 사실이지만 대부분은 그렇지 않습니다. 미국 십대들도 대부분의 한국 아이들처럼 착한 아이들입니다.
통계에 따르면 미국 학교에서 폭력을 저지르고, 마약을 복용하는 비율은 별로 높지 않습니다. 사실 마약 사용률은 상당 기간 낮은 상태를 유지하고 있고, 학교 폭력에 대한 의식이 높아져서 모든 형태의 폭력이 학교 당국에 의해 철저히 다루어지고 있습니다. 제가 고등학교에 다니던 1980년대에는 미국 학교에서 마약 사용률은 늘 높았습니다. 그럼에도 저는 무사히 고등학교를 마쳤고, 성공적인 성인으로 자랐습니다. 지금의 저에겐 아이들이 마약을 하거나, 학교에서 다치는 것보다 등굣길에 다칠까 그게 더 걱정입니다.
물론 우리가 늘 조심해야 하고, 불필요한 위험을 감수할 필요는 없겠죠. 그러나 두려움이 우리 삶을 지배하도록 내버려둘 수는 없습니다. 너무 오래, 깊이 생각한다면 날마다 터지는 온갖 끔찍한 일들에 대해 걱정해야 할 것입니다. 그러나 일어나지도 않을 일을 끊임없이 걱정하면서 보내기에는 우리 인생이 너무 짧지 않을까요.
행동 심리학자로서 제가 말씀드리고 싶은 것은 사람들이 근거 없는 가능성을 바탕으로 잘못된 선택을 한다는 것입니다. 비행기 충돌 사고를 보고 중요한 여행을 포기하기도 합니다. 비행기 충돌 사고의 가능성은 극히 미미한데 얼마나 어리석은 일입니까. 두려움에 의한 선택이 아니라, 사실에 근거한 선택을 해야겠습니다.

My wife told me a story that I found very amusing. She told me that when she was growing up in, her father loved to watch old Clint Eastwood movies, westerns mostly. In those movies, every character carried a gun and used violence to solve all of their problems. When she first came to , she was half expecting to see everyone carrying a gun. Obviously this is not true. Even I fell for this to a degree. I grew up in Wisconsin where there was very little crime (I did get my bicycle stolen when I was a kid!) but the first time I went to New York City, I more than half expected to get mugged even before I left the airport. Now I realize how silly my fear was and I hope my wife realizes her fears about and American people were unfounded as well.
In a similar manner, many people, even Americans themselves, think has turned into a horrible place with crime occurring everywhere. These false beliefs are fed by the media. News programs tend to focus on the negative most of the time. There is a seemingly endless string of bad news. As a parent I am especially aware of all of the kidnappings that get reported! Those kidnappings in Missouri a few weeks ago had major coverage. Don’t get me wrong, those were a huge tragedy that should never happen, however, what the news doesn’t tell us is that the vast majority of children do not get kidnapped, only a very few do. The isolated cases of kidnapping not only make the news, but dominate the news and get reported endlessly. The fact is that the crime rate in is at one of the lowest points in history. However, has over 300 million people and with that many people there is always something bad happening somewhere and it is there that the news programs focus. You are more likely to get struck by lightning than to be kidnapped!
More to the point, American kids are not as bad as many people might think. I know that Korean parents in are worried about their children’s American friends. They are afraid that bad American children might influence their children. Though it is true that some American teenagers do drugs, carry guns, and have sex, most do not. Most American teenagers, like most Korean teenagers, are good kids. According to statistics, violence and drugs in American schools are not all that high. In fact, the levels of drug use are lower than they have been for a long time and the raised awareness of school violence has led to crackdowns by the schools on all forms of violence. In the 1980’s, when I went to high school, drug use in American schools was at an all time high. Yet despite this, I, and everybody else, made it through high school safely and went on to become successful adults. Today in 2007, I’d be more worried about them getting hurt on the way to school than I’d be worried about them doing drugs or getting hurt while at school.
Of course we need to be careful and not take needless risks, but we cannot let our fear rule our lives. If we think long enough and hard enough (and maybe watch the news a little bit), we can discover all kinds of new and terrible things to worry about. However, our lives are way too short to be constantly worried about things that probably will never happen. As a behavioral psychologist, I can say that people make bad choices based on an incorrect notion of probability. You see the news coverage of an airplane crash and decide not to take that important trip. How silly, the probability of an airplane crash is really low. We need to make smart decisions based on facts, not on your fears.
